Dirty Rock & Roll Dance Party presents avant-pop psychedelic band Strawberry Mountain from Seattle, WA.
Placebo Jesus rings to life with pulsing verve, featuring jangling bells echoing over Carter Prince’s smooth vocals calling out in syncopated mirror-rhythms: “all this beauty would be meaningless without all this pain, without this death.”
The new single from Seattle-based outsider collective Strawberry Mountain sees singer/songwriter Carter Prince exploring new sonic landscapes and dynamics as he diffuses grief with humor. The song is a vaguely operatic journey that sees the grieving young musician charge headlong into the impending apocalypse, featuring evolving beats, a warbling 1960s farfisa organ, and big builds that flirt expressively with mild dissonance.
Written following the deaths of two close family members, Placebo Jesus is as much a coping mechanism for Prince as it is a testament to the band’s DIY ethic. Written and recorded collaboratively, the song calls to mind all that’s best about the flourishing Seattle scene while staying true to Strawberry Mountain’s eclectic zeitgeist: magnetic, frenetic, and sonically compelling.
Recently featured in a KEXP in-studio performance and fresh off a US west coast tour, Strawberry Mountain are planning on hitting the road again for an east coast tour in the fall and a southern US tour in the spring.
